only mp3 programs play sound in windows xp

hello, i make music. after moving and doing a system restore, i found that the sequencing program i typically use, cool edit pro 2.1, stopped playing sound inside the program. windows media player, itunes and winamp will play songs (even songs i create and mixdown in cool edit), but no sound is played inside of cool edit pro. i thought it might be isolated to that program, but sound won't play in adobe audition, ableton live or cubase.

after the initial system restore, fruity loops also wouldn't play sound within the program, but after clicking something that said 'use hardware buffer', it started playing sound again. now i find it doesn't work after another system restore. dvds play video but no sound. i have the same problem with youtube. basically, the only thing that plays sound are mp3 programs. i'm confused. here are my stats:

Check Device Manager, any yellow ? or ! marks showing, report shows C-Media as sound adapter, check this to see if default driver

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Hope this helps

before a reinstall, you need to know where you can get your drivers. Try the solutions below first.

This is the link to your motherboard drivers, audio as shown in report is C-Media http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=K7S41GX

but check this out first, it seems to be a recurring problem

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING ANY DRIVERS JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps
