Choppy Audio with static on laptop

i have a Pavilion zd8000 (actual model number is zd8230us) that came with Windows Media Center, but the need to sign onto a domain necessitated the move to XP Pro. My sound ran fine for some time, but now i am experiencing chopy/static-y sound. i plugged in earphones to make sure it wasn't the speakers, and no luck. i lowered the hardware acceleration in the sound properties in Control Panel.

i went to HP's site, and entered ZD8230 and NO audio driver is present. So, i entered ZD8000 and got the driver from there. Still no luck.

After reading several other posts, i see that it's Belarc Advisor is recommended. So, here is the results.

I would update the Chipset, Intel Software Installation Utility

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Did you get the Conexant AC'97 audio driver

Cheers

Highlighted section, Conexant Modem and AC'97, look at this, see what is listed as audio
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

See if Conexant or conexant AC'97 is an option
Cheers

First off, thanks AGAIN for all your help!

i go to Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, but i don't initially see "Properties" and then "Sound Playback"

i see four tabs:

Volume
Sounds
Audio
Voice
Hardware

On the initial tab, Volume i see:

Device Volume (which has an advanced button)
and
Speaker Settings (which has Speaker Settings button and Advanced button)

First audio is Conexant AMC and from the shot Volume is set to Mute, remove tick from that box, see if sound comes back

OK ... update.

Chatted with the ONE helpful person that HP must have, and she/he (the name was Jamie, so i dunno) had me uninstall the IDE channel, and run a patch that turned on (or off, i forget) PIO (whatever the hell that is). Then, i restarted and reset the BIOS.

Then, i booted into windows and was supposed to reinstall the IDE channel, but i keep getting an error when Device Manager references my Win XP disc.

On a side note, the audio isn't choppy anymore, but now i'm concerned about this IDE channel thing.

Glad you got sound fixed, but I'm not up on the IDE, have a word with these guys, they will know more than me http://72.29.80.128/Forum/

Just copy and paste the reply to this post and your comps setup, put the link to Dell in the post. it sounds like a conflict

Hope this helps
