audio, modem not installed after dual-booting xp in sony vaio

Hi guys
I have a sony vaio fe890 with windows vista business preinstalled. I recently dual-booted xp which works fine. Ive installed the intel 945 chipset drivers and the nvidia drivers.
In vista i have sound and the device manager lists "sigmatel audio device". But in xp there is no sigmatel detected. Only a problem with "Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio" is shown. In system->sounds there are no audio devices listed. How do
I install the sound drivers?
Also in vista my Conexant HDAUDIO Soft V92 data fax modem is listed but in xp its not detected at all.
The Sony site has only vista drivers not xp.
The Belarc analysis is :

Ha ha ..I am not alone. I got VGN-FE890E a few weeks ago and installed WinXP professional dual boot. XP side showed SigmaTel Hd audio CODEC under device manager but no sound. Called Sony support and they said check back esupport.sony.com later. Yeh, right...bulls...

I downloaded KB888111, KB835221 (Microsoft UAA) from Intel and installed SigmaTel driver from Vista side but no sound. Found SigmaTel HD audio driver for VGE-SZxx for XP but will not let me install. says not for this model.

Download SigmaTel XP driver from Dell, HP, Gateway, Toshiba...not working...

I did resolve wireless network driver, modem driver by downloading from Intel.com
Go find 945GM there. The only thing outstanding is Audio.

In device manager, find modem, if you get exclamain mark then click to update driver and
say specific location and point to c:\windows\DRIVERS\ and find modem folder to install
the modem driver. or maybe I used the one download from Intel.com

Plan to return this piece of crap if no solution found.

Wink

Thanks for the help on this...

Just wanted all to know that you MUST install the KB835221.exe FIRST before trying to install the Japanise file STDAUD-01108005-UN.exe

If you try to run the stdaud first it wont find the hardware.

The Chip Set for the VGN-FE890 is the Mobile Intel® 945GM Express

you can go to Intel's website and down load the drivers for the chipset.

you can also get the drivers for the Intel Pro/100 VE onboard ethernet and the pro/Wireless 3945ABG all at the Intel website.

Some place on the web i found a link to a FE version 4 file on some Sony europe ftp / web site that has 90% of the drivers you need for this unit with XP Pro. Sony does not support XP on these units in the States. I "think" i found the link on notebookforums. When i went to the link it was not listed as FE890 the files were listed FE1.exe FE2.exe FE3.exe FE4.exe There was 3 pages of files Sony drivers. I took the most recent

At this time the only driver i am missing is for the Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus... but who uses a modem these days?!!!

XP Audio Driver

Thank you regarding the advice on the XP Audio driver but I have got a small hitch. I have a VGN-FE41Z which I converted from Vista to XP. Have got most of the drivers working apart from the Audio one. Followed your advice and installed the KB835221, KB888111 and STDAUD-01108005-UN.exe. It now makes a sound while startup and even gives a beep when I receive an email or an error. But if I try to play a music file it fails, Windows Media Player says "device not working". I would be really grateful for any ideas from all the geniuses out there. Thank you.

Hello again.

Having now discovered that SigmaTel runs the audio in Sony Vaio machines, I found a driver and installed it, but I don't know if it's the right one or if more is required. Anyway, it registers in Device Manager and says it is working normally, but I still have no sound. My mic was also not working, but on boot today, I am hearing loud feedback as the mic is picking up everything. I can't control this in windows settings and can only turn the speaker vol down.

My machine came with Vista. After struggling with that for a while, I decided to give up, re-format and go back to what I know......XP. Everything is OK except this sound problem. All my settings seem OK. Here are reports generated by K-Lite Codec Pack, Winamp and Media Player Classic. I should add that video plays perfectly. Any help will be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Check these out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Thank you Bookworm for your reply. But none of the 2 problems mentioned is happening in my case.

Check these out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

It has got Sigmatel Audio as the only option and that is selected.

The service is automatic and is started.

So don't really know now what to do. Anything else I can try?

Thanks

worked

After a month of trying to get working audio drivers and taking my laptop to three different pc people, the link to the Japanese website worked! I am having the same problems as above with windows media player however. Also plugging my headphones in doesn't turn off the speakers on the laptop which may be annoying to other passengers when editing video on a plane ( for work reasons I have to travel and with tight deadlines I have to edit while in flight)

Thank God for this website!

By the way I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ140e with sigmatel HD Audio.

I think some type of driver for my audio device is not installed. All I know is that there is no sound coming out of my laptop and when I go to Control Panel, it says there is no audio device.
What do I do?

Hi all,

Seems like I am not the only one going through this ordeal....

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ104E Laptop which came with Vista. I hate Vista and so I (with great difficulty and by spending extra $150) got XP installed. The problem now ofcourse is finding the drivers. So far the USB ports are working but no sound, the AV Mode button is not working, can't find the driver for the modem, and so on....

I will be really very grateful if someone can help me find the drivers for my Laptop. Also, how can I make my XP CD recognize the SATA drive (when I boot with the XP CD). This is where that guy charged me $150 but though I don;t know the details, but he certainly did not install any SATA drivers because when I try to boot with Norton Ghost or Acronis boot disk, they too do not find the SATA harddisk.

Once again, can someone please help.

Many many advance thanks.
