XP reformat, no sound - Dell Dimension

Hi Bookworm,

Obviously writing here because of a sound problem after an XP format. Someone else wrote about a similar issue with a Dimension 9100 but he/she never followed up and your tips then couldn't resolve my issue either.

Anyway, I believe all my drivers are installed correctly and are up to date, as there are no yellow question marks in the device manager window. After a bunch of looking around and reinstalling drivers over and over again, I still am at square one with my sound problem.

A lot of your posts seem to have been links to location of the appropriate audio driver and according to Dell the R114282 SigmaTel driver was what my computer needed. So for the record that particular driver has already been installed and after a reboot still no sound.

I know you want the Belarc specs so I'll stop trying to describe my situation and just give you what you need. Thanks in advanced for your reply and I hope other people are thanking you for your continuous help after all these years.

Fixed.

So I uninstalled all possible audio devices from my computer and restarted. After it rebooted I let the computer find the audio device itself and let it install the correct one. Turns out that's what it took to fix my sound problem.

Anyway that's that and if anybody who searches this forum, like I did, finds out that they need more information from me about my fix, feel free to send me a message and I'll try and explain what I did.

Or better yet, you could just post the problem on this forum and have an expert answer your issue for you.

Hello, O' Helpful Gods of Sound Troubleshooting!
I'm obviously doing something wrong here:
I reformatted XP, and have installed up to Service Pack 3, but I have no sound from my speakers. I had all the original discs from when I first purchased the computer (custom built, several years old), and have installed all the drivers that I can think of. I'm hesitant to poke around in the BIOS.

Realtek AC'97 is the enabled driver - But apparently Nvidia might play a role in that too? I've gone online and downloaded and installed the latest AC'97 drivers.
