P4M266-8235 is the chipset used on a lot of boards, whate make and model is your comp, if not sure get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the software and win update section http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Hope this helps

Unhappy Good news and bad news...

The good news is that my computer is at least recognizing the sound card now. It shows up under audio devices. The bad news is I still have no sound. I checked anything and everything I can think of. The speakers themselves are fine, the drivers are installed. I checked all the settings as directed by the Windows Troubleshooter.

Any ideas?

My one concern is maybe I didnt download the correct thing when trying to download the chipset. There were 23 files available- I downloaded the latest version of the INF Utility Files. Was that correct? Any other ideas?

Check this out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Then if thats ok, try installing this way, you will need the location of the downloaded driver

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Go to Device Manager, then right click on what is displayed under that (could be unknown PCI device, Soundmax, Realtek etc)

Then click Driver

Then click Driver update

Then it will ask if you want to check Internet for updates – click No

Then click Install from a different location

Then push the Browse button

Direct it to the folder you unzipped the files to

Then click Ok

Hope this helps

exasperated with same issue

I am in awe of how helpful and knowledgeable the members are here. I have been scouring this forum for 4 days now and alas, I now have to post as I am at a loss.
This is on behalf of my friend's computer. He reinstalled Windows XP home edition and now has no sounds. There is a yellow exclamation mark beside "MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device" and it also said that no sound or mixer device is detected. After much reading I at least figured out that I should download the Belarc profile so here it is. I would really like to try to figure this out for him as he has no money to take it in to be serviced. Oh, and a major post-script here: I do NOT speak computer-speak! LOL Please use plain lingo - baby talk if you like. Thank you in advance,
Jodi

still says no sound device

Hi Bookworm,
thank you so much for your reply. I followed your instructions and in the control panel under sounds and audio devices it still says "no audio device". In the device manager there are no longer errors in the sounds category, so that is at least a step in the right direction. I do, however, have exclamation marks showing on: "other devices > PCI device and video controller". Would this have any bearing?? Shall I run another Belarc to show what has changed??
Thanks again, you are a tremendous help.
Jodi
p.s. ok, after restart I get an error that says "This system does not support the drive you are attempting to install"
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........I know we are so close, thanks for helping!!

Jodi
edit: ok, downloaded and tried to install the other sigmatel listed and am receiving the same "system does not support" error.
