Multimedia Audio Controller - No Sound

My Multimedia Audio Controller wont install and my laptop has no sound. It must have been removed accidentally. When I try "upgrade driver" from the Device Manager it doesnt install and gives me the message "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software". I have uninstalled it from the Device Manager and upon detection by XP at logon it gives me the same statement.

The problem is that I dont know which driver it was. I have included my Belarc report here to help you assist me.

Need more info, make model or Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Hi,
I reinstalled XP SP2 and later found out that my drivers' CD was missing.. There is problem at two places in the device manager under "Other Devices" section; the options 1.Multimedia Audio Controller and 2. PCI Modem are showing yellow icons of conflict. My PC has lost sound. Here is my Belarc report. Can you help ?

I forgot to mention, the whole problem is that when I try to install the standard dell Audio Control Driver, the installation fails, I checked the model number and retried it several times with no success.

Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus

you need to force XP to use the driver, install this way

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

After the auto unzip of the files, Install Shield Wizard automatically comes up and gives me an error that reads:

"An error (-5009 : 0x8002801d) has occurred while running the setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other application. If the error still occurs, please contact your vendor: Analog Devices Inc.."

This is the same error I got before.
When try to specify to the update program where to find the driver files, (C:\DELL\drivers\R94481 is what I have for it) it says:

"The location you specified does not contain any device information files. Please enter another location or uncheck the 'Include this location in the search' box."

Although, this is probably because the installation of the driver failed, but I still have the unzipped files...should I try updating my installer? :]

Am I supposed to try installing it through the update program, straight from the zipped file I downloaded? If so, I cannot select that on the update window, either. D: My computer fails epically, lol.

the report shows the model as Quanta EW2 - this company makes notebooks for a lot of manufacturers one being Optima - the serial number does not link at Optima that is why I need the maker. There is a link to the EW2 at Optima but can't be sure it's right. Anything showing on tne notebook label at all, or Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section
