advanced sound problem - SiS7012
Hello everyone. This is my first post, i've read many other posts here but no one else's solutions have worked for me.
I recently formatted and installed XP pro. since then i have no sound.
i downloaded the SiS7012 driver, when i try to install, it fails and this error pops up, "-536870397". after that terribly useful message the setup program closes.
then when i go to device manager -> sound, video and game controllers-> SiS7012 w/ the yellow dot/exclamation point ->properties :
{Location: PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7
--
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.}
THEN, i uninstall that driver and try the same thing with the Realtek ac97 Audio driver and the same exact thing happens.
below are the specs. thank you for any help :]
NOTES: in control panel under "sounds and audio devices" it doesn't recognize my plugged-in speakers. the area for "playback device" is grayed out.
when i was installing XP the single file "p3.sys" was unable to copy to the drive. not sure if this makes a difference.

It's most likley that you need the C-Media audio driver, go here to ECS
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Dow...uID=39&LanID=8
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

manually install this way, use the If no Setup File method
Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

For me it is not working
(I have installed SP3 on Win XP Pro Eng)
So, i tried C media drivers exactly as it was directed.
But I got "!" on the device in Device Manger.
And then after restart it was the same.
And when I checked the properties it sayed that
"Device could not start . Error code 10"
(I donot remember exactly how it was)
So I roll back driver to Realtek WDM404
But the reason why i needed alternate driver
is that I suspect that latest driver designed for
dual core processor systems, because I got
clicks in the sound when hard drive is in use
or much resources requereing program runs.

The latest Realtek should work, but to be sure you have the right driver, what make and model do you have, if not sure Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.
