take a look at this from Dell it's a conflict between the onboard audio and the sound card http://support.euro.dell.com/support...9&l=en &s=gen

look in Device Manager and see if Soundmax is showing as installed, you can right click and Disable the driver and see if that solves the problem.

i downloaded the ac97 audio driver, extracted the files and ran DotNetInstaller.exe, but nothing appeared to happen. i also tried the multimedia driver but that gave the error message "cannot detect the device, please confirm the device is configured properly and then restart the setup program.

you need to check that audio is Enabled in the BIOS, all commands are done using the keyboard, click images to focus

as soon as comp boots press the <Del> key

the Main menu opens
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...tra%20main.jpg

use the down arrow button to select Features - press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...Featurs%20.jpg

audio should show Enabled

if Disabled use the down arrow to select

use the + key to change

press F10 key to save & Exit

y key to accept changes

XP will load

install audio driver again

Don't forget the Restore Point

Try installing this way - use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it (make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Don't forget the Restore Point

I had tried this before. I re-tried and in both cases it BSODs. After restarting it starts the 'install new hardware wizard' for the AC'97 drivers.
