go here and use this program fro SiS to identify what drivers they have, it's the chipset driver, it will check what SiS drivers you need and link you to them, accept the ActiveX plugin, it's safe
http://www.sis.com/support/support_prodid.htm

click I accept then click to proceed.

The online Identification Utility Results:
North Bridge Chipset - Not SiS
South Bride Chipset -
Graphics Processing Unit - N/A

Related Drivers:
Graphics N/A Download Now
USB Provided by OS
Audio Not SiS Provided by Board Maker
Lan (same as audio)
SATA Download Now

The Chipset reads SiS 964

Well I've spent hours trying to figure this one out and finally success.
SiS website couldn't read that the chipset was made by SiS for some strange reason as CPU-Z read the North Bridge was SiS 662 and the South Bridge was 964.

*SiS only has two audio drivers, SiS7012 & SiS 7018
I went ahead and tried SiS audio drivers and in process of installing I received the error
" updatedriverforplugandplaydevices " ( - 536870397 ).

CPU-Z tells me my motherboard (AKA - mainboard) is an Intel D201GLY so I head to Intel's Support and Download section to see what they got.
I go ahead and down their ADI* AD1888 AC97 Driver. Run the setup and received the Blue Screen of Death with the portcls.sys error right as the installation ends. So now I'm just frustrated.

I go all out and format the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. I tried SiS drivers again and receive the same error, I try Intel's drivers and instead of the Blue Screen of Death, it just reboots the computer with no success.

Solution was to go to Device Manager and choose Have Disk instead of letting the computer search. I tried the SiS driver first and no sound but at least something was installed. Used Intel's driver and BAM! Success!

Figured I would keep you updated, thanks sound queen.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll make a note that this driver needs a forced installation for future reference.

had a look at the driver download, this is the path I took

Folder AD1888/ W2k_XP / now a Setup. Setup.exe file is there , but look at folder SMAXWDM / W2k_XP

try updating using the If No Setup File method and navigate to this folder and try installing this driver.

haha i just checked back here to let you know that i figured it out...but i did exactly what you just suggested XD
first of all i had to download something called "Driver Sweeper" and remove any evidence of the AC97 drivers that weren't working, aswell as removing anything in device manager and add/remove programs. then it worked. previously, it kept trying to install other ac97 drivers that weren't compatible. i also had to do the uninstalling and installing in safemode.
so to recap

1) boot in safemode and remove any audio drivers from device manager AND add/remove programs

2) boot normally and run driver sweeper, removing any AC97 drivers.

3) boot in safemode and MANUALLY install the correct audio drivers

4) boot normally and everything should be dandy.

the only problem i have now is that medieval: total war 2 still doesnt detect the onboard sound so i'll go ahead and reinstall that, see if it works.

Thanks again for all your help!
