I've installed several C-Media drivers and it says that they're installed fine and they don't need to be updated, but I still have no sound support, and dxiag still tells me I don't have a sound card.

These are the drivers from Sony, you have to download the lot I'm afraid. Audio is ADI 1981b which is soundmax. Also you need the Sony Shared Library as it contains INF files.
http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downl...s=VGC-V&m=1753

When you open the download all the files are listed under their name in folders. If it lists a Chipset then install first, then the Shared Library then the audio

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
