no sound after xp reinstall

I am using a Tagar computer with a Mckinnon motherboard. The Tagar company is no longer in existance.I have tried reinstalling the soundmax driver but when I do it gives me an error message of "no driver found.reboot and try again"

when I go to my device manager it says I'm using a unimodem half duplex audio device

when I go the control panel and click on sound and audio devices , under the volume tab it says "no audio device"

when I go to control panal and click on sound and audio devices , under the audio and voice tabs it says in all defaults "modem #1 line playback" or modem #1 line record"

I have to admit , this one has me stumped

had to reinstall XP because windows XP would not load if that makes a difference.Everything working now except the sound

Please Help

Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

Sorry misunderstood open Belarc and highlight all above Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes - by holding down the left mouse button - starting at bottom right move up to top until all the text is highlighted - release mouse button - right click - select copy - then release mouse button.

In your post when you reply at the flashing cursor - right click - select paste and the report will insert into the post.

These are your drivers from Gateway http://support.gateway.com/support/d...s=Windows%20XP

Audio is Soundmax 2 versions, you may have to try them both, but install this way, you sometimes have to force the install with Soundmax

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

I'll try forcing all of the drivers. However, none of them list the "Intel (midway)" as supported hardware.

I'll let you know!

Well... I forced the driver install, and the wizard asked for a realtek disk. Probably because info I got somewhere else said I might have realtek. Anyway, I assumed that i need to install the sound max software, and then the driver. At the end of install for the software, I get error.

"driver not found, reboot your system and reinstall"

Getting real buggered here!

Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section

Open Everest - expand Computer - select Summary - select Report - Quick Report - HTML . The report opens, using mouse hold the left button and starting at all above Debug-PCI - highlight all the text - when highlighted right lick mouse - select Copy.
