Sound in some areas but not all

Hello my name is Gary....I don't have much experience with computers...so here goes.....I have sound on downloads that I have kept....I have sound with IM.....but all of a sudden I lost sound on certain links people have sent me and also I have lost sound viewing YouTube and also with Quickbooks that I have installed....I have downloaded Flash 9.0 thinking that would help and I still do not have sound . Not sure what to do next.
