No sound on 'Scaleo J' PC after moving from Vista to XP

Hello there,

Home for the Xmas, I set about the task of fixing up the computer my parents bought several months ago and which has been plagued with problems since the off. I decided to replace Vista with XP, as I think (and want to be sure) that the issues are not with the hardware but with this buggy beta product.

Upon installing XP however, I discovered that the drivers CD that came with the computer was for Vista only! I've spent a lot of time in the past few days trying to find out what the relevant drivers are and install them, but the audio is a major problem. As yet, XP still doesn't recognise that there is an audio card in the machine. When I try to play an MP3 file in WMP, I get Error ID 0xC00D11BA. This worked fine previously under Vista.

In Device Manager, under Other Devices, there is an exclamation marked PCI Device. Location is given as PCI bus 0, device 20, function 2.

From somewhere or other (I can't remember which site or application I'm afraid) I discovered that the sound card is 'ALC Azalia 260,883,888,888s'. This is Realtek and onboard I think, but I can find very little info about this online.

Also, I found there is a BIOS update from 3.13 to 3.14 available - I don't know if this would make a difference, and anyway maybe installing it would violate the warranty (which still has 3 months left to run), and I can't do it if it does.

Here's the description of the system from Belarc. Under multimedia, it says 'none detected':

So, does anyone know which driver I need and where I can download it?

Also, I've had a few issues related to the video drivers during this process (I'm using the ATI Catalyst latest chipset drivers), and am thinking of just reinstalling Windows again when I get this last piece of the jigsaw - in this case, should I reinstall in this order?

XP (SP2)
SP3
.NET 2 (was having lots of errors before I installed this)
DivX
Chipset drivers

Thanks for reading through this, any help appreciated!

Update: I installed and ran Everest + found that the name of the chipset is ATI RS400. A bit of googling revealed this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=109221

where someone with the same motherboard seemed to have the same problem (I also had several other devices marked in device manager until I installed the catalyst drivers), so I did what worked for him and installed the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 1.84 from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4902

Unfortunately, it seems to have made no difference whatsoever The person in question also said they had the Audio Adapter ATI SB450 - High Definition Audio Controller on their system, which I've found no mention of on mine, so that presumably is why it didn't suit. Anyone any ideas?

Problem resolved! I installed Microsoft hotfix KB835221 (the Microsoft UAA driver), and now everything is fine; as soon as I had done this, the computer recognised the hardware, and the Realtek driver for it I had installed earlier. Apparently KB888111 is a never version of this hotfix and should be installed instead, so I'll try it later, but the earlier one seemes to work fine. Both are available for download here: http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/arc.../11/81540.aspx
