Can't read the Dynabook site, a driver here at DriverGuide, but it's a shot in the dark as it's listed for Sony Viao notebkkooks.
Register first http://members.driverguide.com/ums/index.php?action=r

logon - no to Offres - left pane Search - Simple - leave all blank except model: and type in 82801DBM ICH4-M - search database - one driver only.

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

There are 2 ways to do this, the simpler method is to reset the defaults, this way
1. During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
2. Press F9 to set defaults.
3. Press F10 to Save and Exit.

audio is [Enabled] by default - try see if it corrects it.

Question

In BIOS, this is wht is listed under Peripheral Configuration:
Serial Port A: its Auto
Parallel Port: its Auto too
Mode: its Bi-directional

None of the other options are present. Wht does this mean? Is anything wrong with my motherboard?

What make and model is your comp. look for a label of any kind , looks like an OEM BIOS

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.

As per the description of Audio Device under Peripheral Configuration, it says that this option does not appear when there is no onboard audio subsystem. Now does that mean, my onboard sound chip has gone bad?

Yes, have you tried the system file check. try to install the driver this way

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

cant do the SFC right now as dont have the cd with me at the moment... but will tht tomorrow in the morning...

abt installing the driver frm device manager, thr is no yellow exclamation on any of the items under Sounds, video and game controllers. The items listed under this section are:
Audio Codecs
Audio Codecs (Audio Codecs is listed twice)
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

However there is a yellow exclamation on Other Devices Section, there is just one item listed under this section: Ethernet Controller (it has the yellow exclamation)

I believe thats my network card, coz i had tried connecting modem to tht card, but it was not working, now i have connected my modem via USB.

Going back to the installation of the sound driver, whn i tried to update one of the Audio Codecs, n browse to the location whr the sound driver is saved, i got the following message on completion:
"The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed."

Can you post a Belarc report, omit the software section and win updates, need to check if it's an OEM board
