Windows Media Player won't play MIDI's

I've got several computers in a lab and they all share the same problem...whenever I try to play a MIDI file I get the following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

MP3s and other media formats work fine...it's just MIDI. Anyone ever seen this problem before?

Not sure if this will help, but have a look at this.

Try re-installing the driver software for your sound-card.

Thumbs up Solution is Here :D

If your other Sound Devices are workin Properly then u dont need to Reinstall Drivers .
Just Do the Following.[list=1]
*.Goto Control Panel.
*.Open Sound and Audio Devices
*.Under the Audio tab go to last DropDown and Select MIDI not MIDI(2)
i am sure the Souls having Problem with Midi have selected MIDI(2)
Just Change it and Enjoy.
100% Tested Method.
Goodluck

Question

I tried doing that, but I have only one choice under MIDI playback; Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.

This appears to be a problem, because I have a realtek AC'97 (integrated) soundcard and the two (SW Synth, and Realtek) don't seem to work together...

Hello,

I have the same realtek AC97 sound card and I also had the problem you are describing. Give this a try;

1) Go to settings - control panel - sounds and audio devices

2) Select the Audio tab and under "MIDI music playback" - Default device: make sure it's set to "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth". Tick the "Use only default devices" check-box for the hell of it. Click "Apply" then "OK".

3) Re-open "sounds and audio devices" and this time select the "Volume" tab. Under "Device Volume" click the "Advanced..." button. It will open up the Volume Control thing. In the Volume control thing, click on "Options" - "Properties". In the Properties window (under the "Adjust volume for" submenu) select the "Playback" radio button. In the "Show the following volume controls:" submenu, tick the "SW Synth" check box. Click OK and SW Synth volume control thing will now be shown in the Volume Control option box thing. Untick the mute check box and adjust the volume. Close the window once you are done and you should hear the midi files now.

Hope that helps.
