Dell Inspiron 9400 no sound after XP re-install

After an XP re-install i click on volume control and it says
"There are no active mixer devices available"

I try installing Dell reccomended driver (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver) but during installation it says "no supported device found"

In device manager it says device is working properly
I tried uninstalling driver but the option to uninstall is not selectable.

under the sound area in the device manager it displays the following items:
Audio Codecs
Legaxy Audio Driver
Legacy Video capture devices
media control devices
video codecs

Any ideas on how to get my sound working?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with the following specs:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
System Model MP061
System Type X86-based PC
BIOS Version/date Dell Inc. A09 6/27/2007
SMBIOS Version 2.4

If you are getting the message " No active mixers " check this

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Thank you for the information.
I didn't know there is a service for windows audio.
Another thing I learned.

What I had to do was I had to manually locate the driver instead of having the system locate it.
I went to control panels > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools > Deivce Manager.
There was one thing with "!" or "?" icon by the name. I forgot if it was "!" or "?".
Then from there, I right click and Update Driver.
Then select "No, not this time" > "Install from a specific location" > "Don't search" > "Have Disk", and then located the driver manually.
