cannot find multimedia audio controller

Like everyone else on this list, I've recently formatted my harddrive and trying to get back the simple things I lost, ie) my multimedia audio driver and video contorller (VGA compatible). Both have the traditional yellow question mark. Now this computer was working reasonable well 3 days ago, so I know that these drivers were there but where I got them and which driver to get, I am a bit lost.

Here are my computer specs (as provided by belarc analysis):

this driver is picky, make a note of where the files have uncompressed ( unzipped to) and install this way, use the If No Setup File Method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

don't forget the Restore Point

When I try to update it says "The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you have currently installed."

check this to see if Soundmax is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on
down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to
focus

It is the modem 0 and there's nothing else to choose from in the drop down box, and my audio plugs are in the I/O plate.

I did all you said and installed the audio again (soundmax) and still nothing. I checked on the control panel sounds and audio and it still has only one option the modem 0. Also the little icon for sound max on my taskbar says "No SoundMAX audio present, You cannot use the SoundMAX control panel."
