Angry A little sound help?

Two days ago, I was on the computer, it froze up (like it always does) and I restarted it. Well, once it started back up there was no sound. The volume icon on the taskbar is gone. We have a lot of problems with this computer, as it's older and uses windows ME (ugh). We have to reformat a lot. So first I tried to recover...got nothing, so I reformatted. Still no sound, and no sound icon. I've read other posts, and tried things that were suggested to them, but nothing. My computer is an HP Pavilion 8870 with Windows ME. Sound card is Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128 WDM. There is a big yellow exclamation mark next to it in the device manager. My sound card is also built in. Below I will post what it says from Belarc. It says I have a Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM), so I'm not sure what's up. Thanks in advance for any help.

Definately ME.

Try this update, though it assumes you have a driver installed:

Thumbs down Nothing

It says "Setup did not detect any Sound Blaster Audio card on your system. Please ensure that Sound Blaster hardware is properly installed before running this Setup program. Setup will now exit."

I've tried this one a few times. It feels like I've tried everything. But, it's still not working so I couldn't have

Typical Creative installer response. You have an OEM device that Creative won't support. Good manufacturer eh? I dumped them.

You can get around it.
Extract the contents of the archive you downloaded. Is there a file called "ctcomp.exe"? If so, run it, then try the installer from setup.exe within the extracted files.

umm...

Yah that's way over my head I'm not quite sure how to do that. If I click on the icon it does the self-extracting thing then comes up with the error. I'm not finding that it downloaded any other files. Sorry, I'm lost!

first Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

report says Sound Blaster compatible, not that a sound card is installed

Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section

Open Everest - expand Computer - select Summary - select Report - Quick Report - HTML . The report opens, using mouse hold the left button and starting at all above Debug-PCI - highlight all the text - when highlighted right click mouse - select Copy
Then open post – right click mouse – select Paste and the report will insert.

HP don't offer an audio driver, need to check the chipset, so as to find board at Asus
