VGA CONTROLLER - my hair is going gray

hi everybody, i've just formatted an old computed i had at home and i totally forgot to check if i still had all the drivers.
after everything was ok except for the vga controller.
the resolution with xp sp1 was fine 800*600 16bit (but still missing), as soon as i've installed the sp2, the resolution went to 640*480 4 bits lol
and i dont know where i can get all those informations to get the correct one.. if anyone of you can help me i would be extremely happy and thankful.
