Question XP can't detect my sound card - HELP!

Recently my PC broke, so we wiped it and installed Windows XP Professional. Now, however, there is no sound... and it refuses to detect the sound card which I know is there (because I had sound before). I am guessing that I need the sound driver, but I have no idea how to get that.

If I try to play any music, WMP gives me the error message: 'Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding.'

I know next to nothing about computers, but I have downloaded EVEREST and here is a report from it: (If someone could tell me the link for the driver I need, I would be extremely grateful)

OH - and, I have no idea myself but, could these sound problems be anything to do with the fact (as I have an unregistered copy of XP and will soon be paying so Microsoft give me a product key making it genuine) that I have been unable to use Windows Update to get Service Pack 2? I have no idea whether something like that would affect that.

Thank you very much for any help.

Try this audio driver.--->http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=1800

You can download SP/3 for XP--->http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows...ce-pack-3.html

Thanks very much - I have downloaded the sound driver, and am now downloading SP3 so that I can run it. I will post back with whether or not it fixed my sound.

Also .. this may sound stupid, but do Windows fine you or anything like that, if they know you are not using a genuine copy of windows? Every time I start-up I get a message saying 'you may be a victim of software counterfeiting' and it offers me XP at a discounted price. It also stopped me from running Windows Update, but now that I'm downloading SP3, that's irelevant - so is there anything bad that can come of just ignoring those messages?

Right, I still can't update to SP3 because I get an error message saying that my product key is invalid. Basically I have to pay for a genuine product key before I can (a) update, and (b) install the sound driver. I'll do this very soon. Possibly today.

Once I'm on SP2 or 3 I will install the sound driver which will hopefully sort things out. Thanks very much for your help, I'll post back with results.

Same problem.

I think I have the same problem as most of the people on this thread. The computer I have cannot detect a sound device and therefore after reading through this I clicked on the Belarc Advisor link and downloaded it like you have suggested to others.
