I cannot get my NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X card to work

I have downloaded and tried every nVidia driver known to mankind but cannot get my NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X card to work and am presently using a generic vga driver. I'm pretty thick when it comes to the gubbins that actually make computers work and would be very grateful if somebody can help me. My mate said I should run Everest and post this information if I was to stand any chance of anybody helping me.

I have probably made things worse by running Drivermagic which crashed the computer and then doing a system restore. But the problem with the video card is a long standing one. I have never been able to use it. Like I said any help would be much appreciated.

Loaded it and the computer crashed to a blue screen with white writing saying that it had shutdown to protect itself; The writing was all jumbled up but as far as I could make out it said something like: CRQL not equal

either the monitor's gone south, the cable is loose, or the graphics card has issues. Here are a few things I'd try to get started:

* Try another monitor.

* Verify the monitor is securely plugged in.

* Right-click My Computer, select properties, select the hardware tab, and click Device Manager. Look under Display Adapters and see what's listed. Let me know if there's a yellow warning icon next to it. Right-click the item(s), select properties, and under the general tab verify the device status says it's working properly.

Changing the monitor gives the same result and the monitor that I normally use works fine on other computers. Whatever nvidia driver is installed it says: this device is working properly: providing you can get there through jumping screens, massive fonts etc. When I am using a vga driver it says : This device is not configured correctly. and there is a yellow icon. The card seems to be located fine. Incidentally there is a driver called GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (Microsoft) which gets rid of the yellow icon and seems to work fine but only if it's installed after startup, but will not work if you have to restart because then it gives the same result as all the other nvidia drivers I have tried to date.

I'm afraid that one is a "no go" one too. I installed it and it automatically rebooted upon completion. Everything seemed to be going OK until suddenly the computer crashed to a blue screen with this written on it in white.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

CRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you may need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software.
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options and then select safe mode.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
*** 0x0000000A ( 0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x804DC351

Ever optimistic I rebooted and after a long time windows started but everything was frozen including the cursor. with all desktop icons thrown to the righthand side of the screen and large vertical stripes to the bottom of the screen.

I went into safe mode to remove it the driver nut before I did, I went into device manager and looked at display adaptor. it showed GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X and it also said this device was working properly.

It has to be some sort of conflict doesn't it but I'm blowed if I can find it.

It may well be driver related or a slight possiblity your video card is damaged. Do you still have the original cd that came with your Video card?

Mekon you appear to have a bad graphics card.Do you have a way to try another AGP graphics card to see if it will resolve your problem?

You can usually buy one cheap for test purposes.I don't game so this
is the type I bought.

Yes I do, but believe it or not the driver that is on it is useless as well. Unfortunately when I bought the PC I had never even heard of a graphics card and no reason to question it. It was only about a year later when I tried to play a game and couldn't that I found I had a problem. I went back to the shop where I bought it but they were not interested. I have been talking to different people about it who reckon its something to do with the graphics card being onboard whatever that means and the motherboard being unable to support it. It seems crazy that somebody can sell something that doesn't work and even crazier that there doesn't appear to be an answer to it.

The graphics card works fine in my friends computer but not mine. It's not the end of the world as I can stay on vga until such times as I can afford another computer. I just find it so annoying that I cannot find the answer because I know, that somewhere out there, somebody does. I know one thing though, my next computer is definitely 100% going to have an intel chip and a separate graphics card which can be anything other than nvidia on pure principle.

Well, if the card works fine in other computers you have a bad AGP
slot. You do have 5 PCI slots on your motherboard so, you could use
a PCI slot Video card. (ATI of course)
