Audio problem

I refreshed my machince with XP professional (SP2, downloaded SP3) and now i cant seem to find the audio driver.

The driver on gateways website (Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565) doesn't work. The driver on microsoft website, only lets me record (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Entertainment --> Sound Recorder) but no audio.

Laptop information:

Gateway, Intel Centrino 1.73 GHz
Model: MX6627
Serial: T385AE1000966

Using AIDA32, audio shows up as
Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller PCI

Rest of the full information is as below:

You probably need to install the "Intel Chipset Driver" for the Intel chipset on your lappy's motherboard.
It's here: http://support.gateway.com/support/d...406&type=10094

This chipset driver should really have been installed before any other third-party drivers but don't worry, install it anyway.

I have already downloaded and installed this driver.

While installing it gave "canot copy file: cannot read from the source file or disk" and once i click OK on this, it tells me that software installation is complete and all my pnp devies are installed.

Well that info would have been useful if included in your first post. Would have saved me wasting my time. If the intel chipset driver won't install, that's the reason for no sound. Try putting the chipset driver download on to a different media or different drive (eg usb stick, cd-rw) and installing it from there.

If still no joy the hard disk may be failing. Find out what make it is and download the testing/diagnostic tool from the maker's website.

Sorry for not putting the failing part in my first post.

I'll try it out later tonight and will let you know the results. Currently i am out with my family.
