go here to Via and install the chipset driver - then restart your comp - if need be install the audio driver again

the older Via 4 in 1 driver may be best

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Sorry to cut in, what Bookworm has posted should have covered this leaving a few things to consider.
First, this could be a third party program like some random media player caused/causing this or any number of files with any number of programs and applications that could have file corruption. Before declaring the sound chip dead, if you have a recovery disk set or onboard restore I would back up the files and recover the laptop back to factory original condition.
If that did not restore the sound and the machine is under warranty I would be calling TimeComputer seeing what they have to say.
If it is out of warranty and still no sound after a recovery you can assume the sound chip is dead. If it shows up in the device manager as you have stated we can safley rule out the possibility of it being disabled in the bios.
I considered the possibility of a third party software controller often installed on laptops for audio that may have issues and looked at TimeComputers site and found they are not very big on support so I have no clue what software it may be and if there are known issues or patches. It seems to be a UK based company and I have never actually seen one in person.
If the sound chip is bad, and it is out of warranty.. best advice I can give would be get a usb headset, they do not use the systems sound card. I have a few machines with no sound card at all and they work very well on them.

Hi ReRun
The laptop has had a restore, the sound was down before that,Ithink I will go with the headset.Time Computers went bust and there was a management buy out so their assistance is zero.

Just found this unresolved thread. Just in case anyone still has an interest here are the details of the machine
Its a rebadged Mitac 8375plus (sometimes labelled as an 8375p or 8375+)
You can download an ISO with the correct drivers for the machine at
http://www.mitacuk.com/etsc/8375p.iso
two possible complications in that Time put their own modems and wireless cards in these, so all bets are off as to what they may be. But chipset/display/sound/ethernet drivers are all on that ISO
DON'T use the driver disk for the earlier 8375 - that uses different graphics
