no audio device
I recently installed an aureon 5.1 sound card into my machine which, up until this morning, was working perfectly fine. To my knowledge between me logging off my game and trying the machine this morning the machine hasn't been touched or even reset.
When I look in sounds and audio devices it says no audio device. Under hardware it still shows the sound card and says its working. Whenever I boot up my machine the icon for the sound card driver appears in the bottom right hand corner but then windows suffers some kind of error (windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close), which restarts explorer and the icon is gone.
Since discovering this problem I've tried reinstalling the drivers but still no joy. When I open the sound card configuration in its own section in the control panel and test the speakers they put out sound so I assume that the problem lies somewhere between windows and the sound card drivers.
Similarly when I test directsound in dxdiag it come up with a no driver error
System:
Windows xp pro
System manufacurer micro star international
System model: ms-7387
Processor: intel dual cpu e2200 @ 2.20GHz
I've had a read of a couple of similar problems and get no joy with most of the solutions, this is the last thing to try before trying to pull out disk recovery software, then reinstall windows
