Sound not working after reinstalling windows xp

Hi, can't seem to be able to download or install my drivers without a driver detective. I tried everything in windows help.
I have a Satelite A60 with a windows xp home edition. my drivers are legacy. I can't adjust volume etc as no audio device. I get the following error message when using windows media player.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
