Sound driver is disabled on re-boot

Whenever I re-boot my computer (XP, SP3) my sound becomes disabled. I have tried all the settings to enable it and the only thing that works is to uninstall the driver, then use the P&P functionality to detect and re-install the driver. Then it is fine.
This is annoying. Any ideas on how to fix it?
