Downloaded the 2nd file - Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows 98 SE, DirectX(R)8 is required to enable advanced features. (Executable file), A4.06 2008/10/1 18295k. Still nothing, but there is the realtek program installed. when I press on volume control, it says There is no active mixer devices available, and all that.

Then in [control panel<sounds and audio devices properties<volume], it still says "no audio device". In the audio section, "No playback devices" for sound playback.

Does this have to do something else than installing the realtek driver?

And is Audio Device different from audio driver? I know that the realtek is an audio driver but is it also an audio device?

I'm having difficulty finding the manual, I need to check how the BIOS is setup, so that you can check to see if audio [Enable] in the BIOS

found it

I'm having difficulty finding the manual, I need to check how the BIOS is setup, so that you can check to see if audio [Enable] in the BIOS

as soon as comp boots press the <Del> key Main menu opens

http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...ard%20Main.JPG

use down arrow to select Integrated Peripherals - press Enter key
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...eripherals.JPG

select Via Onchip PCI Device - press Enter key
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...I%20Device.JPG

Via AC'97 should show [Enabled]

if [Disabled] use down arrow to select

use + key to change to [Enabled]

use F10 key to Save & Exit

y key to accept changes

XP will load

install audio driver again

Don't forget the Restore Point

OKay so:

Integrated Peripherals<VIA OnChip PCI Device:
<VIA AC97 Audio - Auto(Enable)
<VIA onchip LAN - Enable
<Onboard Lan boot - Disable

Does the "onboard lan boot" have anything to do with sound? I guess not...

Anyway, the setup was like that already. The thing right now is that I cant install the driver anymore. After it extracts and starts setup, it closes... Should I go backto the system restore point before uninstalling the driver?

Now that you know the Via AC'97 is Enabled, is there another solution to this problem?

Thanks for your time

one thing Are you’re audio plugs on the I/O plate or in an Expansion slot – see here – click image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

check this to see if Realtek is default audio driver first

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

If still no audio go here to Via and install the chipset driver the 4 in 1 Driver - install then Restart your comp

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

check this

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot
