monitor has built in microphone but doesnt work

hi i have a compaq mv540 monitor and it has a built in microphone. i tried recording sound and talking into it and it doesnt seem to recognize sound. does it need to have a driver for the monitor for it to recognize sound, and where can i get this driver(if i do need one).
