Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller

I recently reformatted and installed windows xp professional, and found that my sound was nonexistant.

I don't really know a lot about drivers, but I sifted around and found that beautiful program called EVEREST, which showed that my only multimedia device is the Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller, so I'm hoping that getting its driver will allow me to experience sound once again.

My motherboard's stats are:

Motherboard ID 12/08/2003-I865G-6A79AD4EC-00
Motherboard Name DFI PS35-BC/BL

Front Side Bus Properties

Bus Width 128-bit
Real Clock 200 MHz (DDR)
Effective Clock 400 MHz
Bandwidth 6400 MB/s

Chipset Bus Properties
Bus Type Intel Hub Interface
Bus Width 8-bit
Real Clock 67 MHz (QDR)
Effective Clock 267 MHz
Bandwidth 267 MB/s

Motherboard Physical Info
CPU Sockets/Slots 1
Expansion Slots 3 PCI, 1 AGP
RAM Slots 2 DIMM
Integrated Devices Audio, Video
Form Factor Micro ATX
Motherboard Size 200 mm x 240 mm
Motherboard Chipset i865G

Motherboard Manufacturer

Product Information http://sj.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_prod...&INDEX_TYPE=MB

I've tried searching its driver down on my own, but to no avail.

Any advice or help would be most appreciated, thanks~

i totally agree with hp being garbage for the simple fact that i own one and yes it is a peice but i just upgraded my operating syste to window 7 ultimate and now i have absolutly no sound i got a X over my speaker icon now it have atempted twwice to install a multimedia audio controller. i also whent to hp website andd downloaded the conextant audio driver and it seams to download but does not show up on my playback device center. i then whent and downloaded a realtek AC97 driver and that seams to do the exact same thing.i am running a HP pavilion dv8000 notebook. if someone could please help me that would be amazing if not i guess i will be forced to go back to windows xp and i really like ll the features that windows 7 offers.

what make and model do you have if not sure get Belarc, copy and paste the report but leave out the win update section and the Software Licence section it gives your Win Product code
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

I hope that my topic title was pertinent ~ thinking back, I probably should've stated the problem with the device.

If any additional information about my computer or the situation is needed, I'll gladly supply it -- I'm just praying that I won't need to purchase a new sound card to fix the problem, since I happen to be a bit low on funds.

Just read the bit ~ downloading Belarc at the moment.

I visited that site, and perused around, but I could not find anything related to C-Media.

Nothing under the downloads / driver section seemed to relate to it (although I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about the driver area so) and I got a bit lost.

Could I ask for a direct link, perhaps?

I've installed the exact thing you highlighted -- and thank you for pointing out exactly where to get it -- and restarted my computer but I don't seem to have sound.

I checked the devices in the device manager under multimedia and none have errors or problems, so that seems to be fine (unlike when I attempted to install other drivers and they wouldn't load, or had errors), but I'm at a loss for what to do now.

Is there another step after installing the sound driver? or should everything be savvy after it's installation?

Actually, as I was attempting to update the driver for my printer, my computer stated that I had "found new hardware," and displayed the realtek audio title, but then a separate box popped up claiming that:

Files Needed

The file "SOUNDMAN.EXE" on Realtek AC97 Audio Driver Disk is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

I've attempted to find a place to download it, but I have not found a reliable link.

I'm also completely unsure of what it is, or where to get it, or if it is even significantly relevant to my problem.

Any help would be graciously appreciated~

what make and model of comp do you have, a label on the tower should give this information.

check this to see if C-Media is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

I believe that my computer was custom built, but...

I... don't have any options under Sound Playback, haha, uh oh.

Do they usually get installed with windows? or how does one acquire them?

have you tried to install Realtek audio driver - the board at DFI shows C-Media

the Realtek driver is here
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Click I Accept – wait for site to reload – click Next

Download the (Executable) file – save to desktop – double click downloaded file and follow installation instructions.

Set a System Restore Point before installing any drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

I installed the realtek audio driver and restarted my computer.

After doing so, I checked under devices and found that the Realtek AC'97 Audio device had a yellow exclamation mark ~ it states that the device cannot start.

try installing this way use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it (make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

don't forget the Restore Point
