driver modem for xp

I have two operational systems in my PC.
In win 98 I use the hsp56 micromodem and I got online any time without problems, but in win xp pro I can´t do it.
I tried to install the hsp56 micromodem for win xp pro from very different places and no one had worked out.
I also had instaled the default plug and play driver the v.90 Pctel but when I try to connect I got the 680 error.
What can be happing??
Is there a compatibility problem?? Because in win 98 it works fine ....
Please help me to get a solution to this, because I'm losing my head to get one ....

usually Windows XP is very slick with Modem and Modem drivers. May be you issue is not the Modem Driver !!! may be you have resource issue !!! Windows XP and Windows 98 handle the computer resources differently, go to My Computer Property / Hard Ware / Device Manager / Modem /Property / resources ,, do you see any conflict in resource setting.

Another thing you could do if you have PS2 or USB mouse. Go to BIOS and disable both COM ports and see how your modem behaves on reboot.
