the philips cdrw does update the aspi and a few other files when you use the install cd that comes with it, it does make windows xp run better over all with these installed, because the files are applied the the hard drives as well, but scouse is correct you do not have to install this for it to work correctly, most of the philips cdrw i have seen for the last couple of years come with easy cd creator 5, which if you plan to use this, disable the on-board xp cd burning software. i recommend nero myself, it doesnt seem to conflict with xp at all. as for the philips cdrw, i have alot of trouble with them, people bought them at the local wal-mart for about $40 us, and they have trouble reading alot of disk, they seem to burn fine, but they dont live long.
