problem with printing

we have a printer HP deskjet870Cxi connected to a windows NT 4.0 sysytem. this printer was shared. we have a windows 2000 system also in lab.
so when i tried to add this printer in printer folders in 2000 system we got the error that proper drive was not installed and do u want to install on u r local system. for win 2000 we need not install driver (i think so) . i am unable to figure out what i have to do. i want to print from win 2000 ( where printer is connected to win NT system and we have network). any one plz solve my problem.

what is your service packs, nt4 should be atleast 6, and 2k should be 4, make sure you have the printer shared by right clicking it, and selecting properties. then on the 2k machine browse for the printer and add it. i would believe you would have to install the printer driver from cd, or network, but could be wrong, i always had to.

Make shore to share this printer then install this printer locally (on LPT ports) on WIN 2000 computer. After installation go to printer properties / Ports chose Add Port / Standard TCP/IP ports / New Port and then just put correct information’s about your printer \\computer_name\port_name* or
\\computer_IP_address\port_name* and that's it.

PS

*Look on your NT computer under Printer Properties / Sharing / Shared as: for port_name information.
