Questions about updating display driver

I have a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 card (memory: 128) and currently using display driver no. 5216

I installed it a few weeks ago and experienced no problems.
However, last week I was trying to install a game and immediately after experienced graphic glitches and anomalies. later I started experiencing a change of dispaly settings on the desktop itself (windows xp home).

Yesterday, I found that there is a new display driver and thought I should install it. But, when I read the release notes I realized that I am supposed to uninstall the current driver before installing the latest. After reading that I realized my possible mistake?! - I did not uninstall the display version before installing my current driver...

What is the best way to pursue the matter? I am far from an expert with computers and not sure what to now without an irreversible damage. Is it possible to "clean" my mistakes and install the newest driver expecting it to work properly?

Go to the NVIDIA Site and see if they have got a 'Driver Uninstaller Program'.

or

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Software.

If the Software isn't listed, go to the Insallation folder and see if there is an 'uninstall.exe'.
