Video Cards

I'm considering getting another Video Card since I'm not to happy playing this new Halo PC game with everything set minimal. I've done some research (well, I asked some dope which card he has) and I was pointed to the Radeon cards, 9600 series. I looked up one I thought was reasonable enough for the price at this link, but I'm unsure I get all the capabilities I need for Halo (namely 3D T&L capability).

Any info on on this card or a better card (considering the price which I kinda wanna keep down to $200 bucks) would be helpful.

Don't know if this helps any, but I have a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra, which does not like Halo. You can turn the settings up a little, and still be able to play most of the time, but as soon as you get some action going on, you may as well just sit back and smoke a cig in between frames. It's not really that bad, but it is annoying. So if you don't go with ATi, definitely get better than a FX 5600 ultra. Overclocking helps tremendously, but Halo is still pretty rough on it.

I've heard about some cards like that, as well as some that causes the game to crash in the middle of it. I'm not sure what causes it.

I found a webpage that list the available video cards that supports Halo PC, which can be located at this link. The Radeon 9600 series is listed in the list. I see your GeForce on there too, sure it's the card?

I haven't looked to much at the GeForce, I might check them out as well.

Well, like I said, it's really not as bad as I said, I am just spoiled. But if you turn the AA and AF on like 2 or 4x each, you will get a headache from watching it twitch. It ain't that long between frames, but definitely not as smooth as my cousin's box with a radeon 9800 (I think XT). But yeah, my video card is the weakest link, just put this box together not long ago. Got a ABIT IC7 Max 3 advance, P4 running at almost 3.5 GHz, and some cheap memory that is running in dual channel mode, and keeping up with the FSB. Just lucky, I guess.

The Gforce Ti4600 is outdated but if you can find one online you won't be dissapointed while playing games.

Question Vice City

What would be a good Video Card for Vice City? It's not too bad most of the time but when i get a lot of cops on me, it starts to get real choppy. What video Card would you recomend for that, that wouldn't be too expensive? I've been looking at a 128 bit GeForce video card. Does anybody know if that'd be good?

I'm using a Geforce4 Ti4400 and I was able to run Halo, Vice City, both Splinter cells, etc without any problems. Halo wasn't at max settings but no where near the bottom either. All games ran perfectly smooth.

Either the games just run better on certain cards, or perhaps there's something wrong other than your card. Is it getting enough power? Possibily card is over heating? RAM and CPU not enough?

I'm running Doom3, at Medium quality and at the resolution above 800x600. 1280x768 or whatever it is exactly not sure. But I think it's along that one. The one right about 800x600 and runs without any amount of choppiness.

Considering the age of the card, and the demand of the Doom 3 graphics engine I consider that pretty good. So I assume the 4600 would be able to handle just as well and no doubt a little better. So if you're looking to save money, and just want a card to get you into the games I recommend the Geforce4 Ti series.

I'm running High Quality with no problem for Doom 3.

The 9800 Pro is awesome card for DOOM 3 and HL2.
