Anyone know of good war games for PC?

I'm looking for presents for a buddy of mine. He's a pretty hardcore RTS gamer, so he has most stuff that's popular. I'm not really familiar with the genre and I don't know all of what he has. I need either something obscure or something new or coming soon. Anyone know any good RTS war games? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Empire Earth II is due out soon. Empires: Dawn of the Modern World is also a good one.

I'm guessing if he is hard core rts he will already have CnC Generals etc

Fantasy rts stuff like Warcraft if he is into fanatasy based stuff

Ummmmmm will ponder others and post as they spring to memory

Never mind I made a list of first person shooter games. KOTOR, CnC as I think said above. War Craft, Age of empires, and more...

Yeah, C&C:Generals is his favorite, that and Red Alert 2. I did a search for games like them and I found a coming soon RTS game called Act of War, have you heard anything about it? Here's a link: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/...ion/media.html
There's a demo out, but I don't have a gamespot membership.... I probably wouldn't know if it were any good anyway, I really have never played an RTS game.

Try Battlefield 1942.... if it is choppy... turn down the effects. it has Full Conversion Mods. Like... Desert Combat, Galactic Combat...Forgotten Hope, Eve of Destruction, and dozens more.... yes... i said DOZENS!!!!! NO... and I mean NO!!! Game can match that. 2 Dozen totally different games to play all from one game...How can you say no. Get BF1942 with both X-packs.

If you like Mission based Games... get the new MOH.

Vietcong was pretty awesome too. anyone of em.

Oh yah, download the Patch 1.61 if you do get it. otherwise Just download the Multiplayer Demo... The Nornal one... there is a Secret Weapons one.... that one rules too... Make sure you download any patches. GOTO WWW.FilePLANET.COM to find any game, demo, or MOD.. ever made

That's how I feel. I like games where I can be at one with the game, not overseeing it. But.... I am not that snobby, I'll play any game that's good. My buddy only likes the RTS war stuff.

Try this new strategy game called Darwinia, coming out March 4th I believe. I don't usually play God games, preferring shooters, drivers, etc. But this one tickled me. It does something that has needed doing for sometime - combines a 'lo-tec' polyginal world with 'hi-tec' lighting and particle effects.

I just finished the demo and am actually *gasp* going to buy the full game.

Try Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. They also have an expansion out for it called Escalation. They are both pretty good game play. Also, if you like to create custom maps, for close quarters battle, or huge maps with custom items, you can download NILE from Novaworld.com. (thru the forums is the easiest). You can fly choppers, or man the miniguns on the choppers. (You get assist points, for that). You can operate boats, tanks, motorcycles, dunebuggies, or you can fire weapons from them. ect.
Its worth a look.

Definately you gotta try Act of War! I tried it because I saw this really cool trailer for it that was done soo well! I am glad that I did!! The graphics are awesome and the storyline is freakishly realistic! But it is one of the best RTS games I have ever played and I cant wait for it to come out!

americas army its free for download but doesnt have a single player mode, it snag from time to time but hasnt crashed on me yet.the graphics are brilliant and the combat is realistic as hell but its a 700meg download

Hello buddy,

Try ROME TOTAL WAR, its an awesome game with breath taking graphics, also try Lord of the rings Battle of the middle earth, and settlers is also a nice game. But settlers is not a war game you can say it is a 90% town and empire building game and 10% war but its fun.

I agree! I give both of these games 5 out of 5!

Speaking of 5 out of 5, G4 X Play rated "Pirates" 5 out of 5. I cannot believe this was a honest review. It was fun for awhile but Pirates learning how to dance to impress women? Lots of negatives. Don't buy "Pirates" unless you wanna lose your friend.

Act of War looks pretty cool, I'm considering to buy this one.

I'm playing Brothers in Arms right now. It's squad based WW2 first person shooter game. It's kind of RTS because you have to order your men strategically to succeed in battle. There is this "situational awareness view" that is pretty cool. You stop time and get a overhead view of the battle and visible enemies so you can plan your attack. Flanking attack with cover fire is king here.

An other idea is just give your buddy a gift certificate for Gamestop, etc. Can't go wrong here.
