Did you even look at Google? I did a search...free strategy games.. and saw a few. Most are demos and simple games. I think if you dig deep you will find something to your taste. Check online stores for specials. Come on, spend a few bucks and get something maybe older but good.
Good luck!

If you want a good bittorrent client, check out bittornado.
http://www.megagames.com also has a large freeware section.

In my opinion, torrents suck. I've never gotten anything good out of a torrent.
Anywho, the internet is a plethora of all sorts of game if you know where to look. eDonkey has some games like Solar Winds, Alien Shooter, and the like, though you have to be patient. If you're looking for games in the format of old games, Neopets has dozens of games that are mostly like old games with a little twist. Plus you can buy things with the points you get off your games. Some other good gaming sites are www.ezone.com, www.coffeebreakarcade.com, and www.flashplayer.com. Free DOWNLOADABLE games are a bit more tricky. Hmm. http://www.freewarehome.com/ has some. Besides that, I'd have to take specific requests for what kind of games you're looking for.

but I'd also like to know where one could download good freeware games! I'd also like to download freeware strategy or puzzle games if anyone know some!
I'd stay away from any filesharing apps though.

I've found an absolutely incredible masterpiece of a strategy game, a true work of art, totally free, less than a half MB to download, NO imbedded adware or pranks or malware, I swear. I mean, I don't rightly know if this is what you were looking for, but I'd recommend Babala to anyone who likes a good mental challenge. I can't imagine anyone who would NOT like it. The game is still in beta, but it's very stable. It has 125 levels, with about 75 more planned! (I've had a sneak preview of 38 additional levels, hehe.) Here's that link again: Babala
[edit: Babala version 0.4.0 was released Aug 2006, 200 levels and it now also features Web high scores posting, using a rigorous secure system.. it's a great game!]

Alright, I have to ask, if those are the kind of games you are into, why don't you go out and BUY the games and their sequals. Age of Mythology is a good game.
Right now I'm into an old game called Starcontrol. It's a stratagy/action game where you strategically colonize, fortify, and/or mine worlds, and pit ships with their own weapons, abilities, and special powers against enemy ships. Personally, I got it off of eMule, and got a Sega Genesis emulator. Funny I'm so addicted to it, since it was made in 1991.
Man, those Syreens are one well-balanced race.
