Problem running old game

I have this old game called "Advanced Tactical Fighters Gold". It came out in 96 or 97 so its system requirments are pretty low by todays standards. Anyways, i tried to run it on my laptop, which is a Compaq Presario 900 Z with windows XP, AMD cpu, 18.6 gig hard drive and 112 mb of ram. I managed to get it installed but whenever i try to play, it crashes and goes back to windows. I tried running it in win 95 mode but that doesn't help. Also, i have a very similar game called "USNF 97" that works but plays way too fast. Is there any way to fix these problems or are the games just too old? I used to play these games on a system with 120mhz cpu and small hard drive with windows 95 that was new in 1995 or 96. Thanks!

The problem is probably that those games were made for some form of DOS, or the fact that windows 95 is basically a DOS frontend. Windows 2000 and XP dont have any DOS code in them, so not all programs will work.

Assuming you have XP, try running it in compatability mode, right click the game icon > properties > compatability tab

I tried running it in 95 compatibility mode. Didn't change a thing. "USNF 97" runs just fine although a bit fast but "ATF Gold" loads, then when i begin to fly it crashes back to windows. Both of these games are designed to run in Windows. I actually have the older versions which run in DOS but haven't used those in years. Mabey i need to find a cheap older laptop for when i want to play older games. Thanks....

problem with xp is everything before xp was DOS based. xp can't play most of them old old games. i sometimes use my old old computer just to fire up them old games. i really don't think you'll get it working well. if you want a hassle free solution, (if you still have around) use your old pc from win 98 earlier.

If you're running XP you need to get dosbox to play DOS games. I have the
same problem. I seriously hope this problem is fixed in the future.
