Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, not quite working

I recently decided to play MGS 1 and 2 on my laptop (a 7330GZ, with an Intel 82852/82855 Extreme Graphics 2 integrated card, so I know I exceed the system requirements). They both installed fine, but neither of them work. I have the latest drivers, and both games were legally bought.

MGS 1

The demo for this game works perfectly fine, but the full version doesn't for some reason. I haven't changed my hardware at all (and I can't anyway), and I haven't done anything else except (un)install software.
After running it the first time, a message comes up saying I don't have the proper hardware to run certain features (but doesn't list them), and says I should run in software mode, then crashes. The second attempt and after, a black window comes up, and a message comes up saying that it previously crashed and will run in software rendering mode, then it crashes. I can't run in software mode myself because I can't even get in-game, and since I'm pretty sure it's a graphics issue, I know my card works because it ran the demo and is beyond the requirements for the game.
I tried right clicking the shortcut icon and changing the compatibility mode to every different Windows version, and tried lowering the system resolution to 640x480 16-bit (since the game tries to force that by default), but neither worked. I tried searching for this game, and since it's so old discussion on it is hard to find, and what little I find doesn't help my problem. There are no menus I can change the sound/graphics settings before starting the game (unlike MGS 2), so I can't experiment with that.
I found a page on Intel for different integrated chipsets regarding the problem of running in software mode, but not hardware mode (even though I can't run in either), and it said there's a patch or update that fixes it, but it doesn't say where. :/ I couldn't find any patches for the game anywhere, and Konami doesn't even have the game on its site. Is there a patch somewhere?
Does the full game not recognize my graphics card, or are there certain codecs I need or shouldn't have? How can I make it work?

MGS 2

After installing, I try to run it on default settings, then later with various different (usually lower) settings. I get the same thing: a black screen with no video, but I can hear music and the sounds of menu switching when I press keys.
After doing hours of searching, I found that someone else with my same graphics card had it working fine without altering anything after installation (in terms of hardware/codecs), but maybe he had things I don't. Someone else who also had my exact problem fixed it by downloading Ace's Mega Codecs Pack and the SDK for DirectX 9 (but he didn't know which fixed it). I downloaded the codec pack, and selected about everything when installing it (and uninstalled the Xvid codec when it told me to), restarted, and the game still doesn't work. I'm hesitant to download the DirectX SDK because I don't think it would help, plus it's a 230 MB download, which is stressful on the dial-up I have (I'm at home, and I don't want to wait 2 weeks before I go back to school for a faster connection). I also found out that "water/ninja effects" tends to crash the game when you die, but I obviously can't verify that yet. I also tried different compatibility options and changing the resolution, but that didn't work, either.
I found a couple patches (1.01 and 2.0), but all they do is enable ATI support, which I don't need, but realized after I installed it. Should I uninstall the patch because it's screwing me up (or reinstall the game since I might not be able to just get rid of the patch)?
Are there certain codecs I should or shouldn't have on my system when running the game? What else should I try to hopefully make it work?

I e-mailed Konami, but it'll be a few days, so I'm trying to get info from other sources while I'm waiting. They might think I'm crazy, too, considering I'm trying to run such old games. :P

Are there any "emulators" for older hardware, DirectX, or anything like that, or are they illegal?

Don't tell me to go get a console and games for that because I'm not going there.

I hope I can get these to work soon, I'm eager to play. :P

Thanks!!

No (and I probably won't), but I know I found the solution to your problem while on my extensive Google search for my problem. I'm not sure if this is it, but I think you have to disable water/ninja effects.

hi again, i disabled it but it didnt work, so i started the game with the 320x240 resolution, and it did work, after that i started the game with the initial 640x480, and it did work again... I think that MGS is partially incompatible with windows xp...
