C&C Generals

Hey guys,
When I play C&C Generals (and Zero Hour) the game freezes for a number of seconds before it continues again. Sometimes the intervals are very short (i.e. it happens one after the other very quickly, which eventually causes my entire PC to crash).

This problem is very annoying, can anyone help me out?
Thanks.

Precisely.

Also please include video card make and model, driver version and cpu and gpu temperatures as well as ingame settings such as resolution.

My first thought would tend to hardware overheating, throttling, then crash because it never recovers.

More info please.
