I know this is an older post, but I have been away for a while and just getting back to the PC. The windows key on the keyboard is a pain, but I hate to disable it, sometimes it is actually handy to bring up the desktop. I had the most gamming trouble out of it when I first played Diablo 2. The show items key was set on alt, I ended up using the control config options and set it to a different key and resolved the problem.
Lagging can be caused by so many different things it is mind numbing.
SP2, and all anti virus programs cause xp machines to use alot more ram. Automatic updating for windows and AV/Security programs lag you up real good too.
New updates for windows, AV/Security programs, burning software, DVD, or any software you add or update can cause conflicts which current device drivers. New device drivers may be the issue, sometimes you have to find the backdated version that works best.
At one time a software firewall was something I never thought I would use, now it is a must have. But this sucks for my gamming, finding good security that does not trash my gameplay. Norton does suck in everyway, it eats ram, conflicts with everything, and does not seem to stop anything. I have used all the free stuff like AVG, Avast, Zonealarm, and all the lesser known stuff, right now I am using McAfee firewall and AV and have had good results. A few years ago, it was non-stop trouble. The other thing is, just because it is working well for me, this does not mean it will for you. Most all of these programs have a free trial period, download what looks good and try it until you find one that works with all of your needed software and hardware.
Battlenet has just been lagging all the time lately, and warcraft is pi$$ing me off. Would not Pi$$ me off so bad if it didnt cost a monthly subscription.
