OK, I would try the following:

Dofus - 2d cartoon graphics, but it has a great layout and design, mostly people are friendly , and the max level you can be is 200. You can also have 5 characters on an account such as a rogue, warrior, archer, protector, mage, and many more. It's a great game, try it, I'm serious. The download is 357MB though, but it's worth it, trust me.

Jerrath - 2d somewhat classical graphics, friendly players, not so easy to level up but its OK, not many players (I went on Jerrath today and it was me and 8 other players online!!) , and it doesn't lag at all, and the download is, I think, like 18MB.
HINT: When you start Jerrath there will be a Newbie Island, just go in front of the cabin, talk in Default, and say /finishtraining. This will take you out of Newbie Island, sort of a cheat.

Zezenia - 2d game, somewhat RuneScape classic graphics but a little better, kind of hard to level up, but it's a great game for a lot of people. Small download around... maybe... 10MB.

Check out this game the graphics aren't up to much but it has enormous content,loads of crafting,quests and up to 1000.10000 lvls.F2p up to lvl 100 then one time fee.

It's called Ashen Empires, which is run and operated by Iron Will Games, but the forums, launcher and site are run by Pixel Mine Games.

It is an MMORPG with alot of better features than RuneScape, but some qualities it lacks, these are the following skills i have done so far, but there is about 10+ more that i know of but havn't listed;

-foraging
-iron forging
-iron smelting
-mining
-fly-casting
-skinning
-large blades
-polearms
-unarmed combat
-spinning
-lumberjacking
-milling

You can also go around killing alot of enemies and such, and when you want, you can proceed to the mainland (not advised until high level, because all experience you recieve is cut by 50% unless you subscribe) and when you are high enough level, you can swap items and such for other players tokens (you have to pay for them with irl money) and you can use them to get free membership

When you download the client, i strongly advise that you patch the client by doing the following;

1) Launch the Pixel Mine Launcher (either by desktop icon or start>all programs>pixel mine>Pixel Mine Launcher)

2) Login to your account (simple enough)

3) When it loads, underneath the list of games, their will be four buttons (options, play, patch and logout), select patch

4) You will now being to download the patches and updates for the client, it will take some time (about 30 mins to 1 hr+), but the wait is well worth it, as you will not freeze or lag at all, which alot of people complain about when the jump into the game.

When you want to play, select Ashen Empires from the list of games and then play, and the game will then load, select either Legends or Heroes (Legends is a PvP server or something), so i chose Heroes, create a character and then Enter Now, and you will begin the tutorial

If you want you can talk to me ingame sometimes, my name is Gornald, to talk you will first have to press enter so you can type into the chat box, then press tab until you see [help] next to where you type.

i know a pretty good game like runescape... but a few major differences in the combat system. also, this game is 3d. the game is called VoyageCenturyOnline (VCO). there you have skills such as:
forging
smithing
shipbuilding
navigating (i have no idea what the use is of it, but it lvls automatically)
combat skills ( with sword, sabre, axe gun or fist (fist lvls with all others as it is important)
first aid
alchemy (makin potions)
wood cutting
farming
and a few more :P
though! you may only have a few high skills at a time. the system goes as follows: there may only be 5 or 6 rank 2 skills (lvl 31-100) at the same time. at lvl 100 you can upgrade that skill to rank 3, and that has, like rank 1, an infinite number of skills you may have at that rank. ship levels do NOT join these skills, these skills are purely the skills you have based on land (except for navigation and sea battle personal version).
as you might have guessed there are ships involved. ships are used for trade (awesome money maker) battles (NPCs or players) and discoveries (to get an awesomely fast ship)
there are 3 ship types: trade
battle
raider (discovery)
trade ships can be upgraded by lvling up your ship cargo hold, you can do this by trading alot. upgraded ships will get big bonuses to all stats, especially the one it's used for, and the size will also increase. the highest lvl ship now is 11 if i am correct. higher lvls also unlock the use of new "avatars" which can be applied to your ship to increase the stats incredibly. the upgrading of ships unlocks the use of better equipment for that ship related to it's specialisation
raider ships can be upgraded by up lvling the i-don't-know-what-it's-called skill of the ship, but you can get the experience by doing alot of discoveries and sailing in storms.
battle ships can be upgraded by uplvling your sea battle, which obviously the experience of is gained by battling other ships.
sea battles are the only way you will fight enemy guilds. mobs are on land to train your hand-to-hand combat with.
sea battles consist of 2 major parts:
cannon fights, which is just a simple firing the cannons.
and grapple, where you enter your opponents ship and go into a melee.

simply said this game is ALOT like runescape, except that the main combat system isn't on land, but at sea. it's also free to play, but you can pay for quicker leveling (called: 200%/300%/400% exp cards) or for random fun items and gems (which obviously go into equipment to give some bonuses)
but mainly you can wtfpwn anything with free to play.
