cant connect to xbox live

I cannot get my xbox 360 full system online, I have a belkin adsl modem with wireless g-router and im on AOL broadband , i connect the xbox ethernet cable to my modem/router and then conect the rj45 cable from the modem/router to my laptop , i sign on to aol and then i do the test to xbox live and everytime it fails the IP test ,i been to the network settings and put some ip ,dns,gateway submask in and still fails the IP test.on automatic the ip,submask,gateway & dns all have 00000s.. i was thinking do i need a actual direct modem that says xbox 360 compatably to get online and what about the xbox wireless adaptor i much rather be connected without the wires being everywhere

my belkin adsl/router is compatable with xbox 360 but internet explorer no longer loads the wizard screen to connect the router to the pc , i installed explorer 7 and tryed netscape but it keeps saying 'web page can not be displayed'. with the direct modem connection can you connect to xbox live without having your pc/laptop on? do you have to install the modem on the pc first? anybody who is on xbox live with aol please tell me how you got online
