Childhood game

There was this game that i played when i was a little kid and i was trying to remember what it was but i coulnt!
In this game you could chose what kind of tribe you wanted to be and then you had to build up a city and defend it. In this game i could go mining, build houses, chop down trees and grow food, there was a whole bunch of other things i could do

I would say Settlers as well, but you didnt really get to choose the type of tribe back then. It would help if you gave us a little more info like how old the game is approximately. Unfortunately this type of game could be anything from Populous to Age of Empires depending on how old you are talking. Give me a little more info and I will see what I can find.
