I would say the most popular types of games would be First Person Shooters (FPS's), Role Playing Games (RPG's), and Real Time Strategies (RTS's).
Picking which game depends on what you like to do. I will provide a brief explanation of each and a few example games that I know are very good and popular.
In each genre there is also the ability to play online with or against other real life people.
First Person Shooters are fairly simple to comprehend. There are sometimes story lines that you follow and go around shooting people and blowing stuff up to accomplish a goal, or you are no one of importance playing with other real life people against other real life people for small goals. There are often many types of guns in these games.
My favorite FPS of all time is Counterstrike. In this game there are Terrorists and Counterterrorists. The Terrorists goal is either to hold hostages or take a bomb and blow up a certain location. The Counterterrorists either try to rescue hostages or prevent a bombing. You work as a team in small map settings and you get money if you kill someone or your team wins a match, then you can buy better guns. Counterstrike is very realistic compared to many other games in the sense that some real life physics come into play. For instance, if you jump, you won't shoot nearly as accurate as if you were standing still or crouching. This game requires internet compatibility.
Role Playing Games are my personal favorite genre. These games can be as simple or complicated as you want. You can usually choose from a class (like warriors or sorcerers) and are usually fighting some sort of fantasy creature like trolls. Each class has strengths and weaknesses. Warriors usually use some sort of metal weapon and use sheer force to defeat their opponent, whereas a sorcerer would use magic. You also get different abilities to use these weapons and magic. These are extremely simple explanations by the way =D
You gain experience when finishing quests or killing monsters which eventually leads to you leveling up, which means you gain in attributes like strength, endurance, or intelligence.
A variation of RGP's is MMORPG's, which are Massively Multiplayer Online RPG's. These are played only online and with a lot of other people, and people often form guilds in order to accomplish quests. People can work together to go into dungeons and kill large monster bosses. This is my favorite thing to do, but it comes at a cost. Almost all MMORPG's you must pay a monthly fee to play. It's usually around $14/month.
Some single player RPG's that are great are Diablo, Diablo 2, or Dungeon Siege.
The most popular MMORPG (which I currently play) is World of Warcraft, or WoW. It is easy to learn and can be played by both the skilled an unskilled gamer. Other MMORPG's are Starwars Galaxies, Lord of the Rings Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest 2, and Lineage 2. I highly recommend WoW.
Real Time Strategies are games in which you control some sort of combat force. You often build up a town in order to train troops, which you then send out to fight your enemy's troops. You also have workers that harvest your resources or money to buy such training facilities.
There is a lot of strategy required to advance in the deeper levels of these games.
The most popular RTS's are Warcraft III and Starcraft. There are a couple others that are less popular and I can't remember their names. Warcraft III is a bit newer and if this type of game sounds interesting to you I would recommend Warcraft III.
A quick note on how much experience or what quality computer you need for each game:
First person shooters more and more require a fast computer with a good graphics card. They require some coordination. If you decide to play online against other people, until you get familiar with the game, you will most likely be playing against people who are a lot better than you, but it can still be very fun.
Single player RPG's do not require very much coordination and can be played by almost anyone. They often do not require an amazing graphics card.
MMORPG's usually require a decent computer setup (although WoW is made to be able to played on almost any setup, whether slow or fast). MMORPG's require a tiny bit more skill to play than RPG's. The reason you pay monthly for these games is because the companies that make them constantly upgrade them and provide new content. You can spend DAYS playing these and not even touch half of the content.
RTS's require mostly strategy. The newer ones do require a decent graphics card.
If you are buying a PC depending on what type of game you play, I would say just go big. Games are constantly coming out and the speed and graphics card in which they require is constantly increasing. If you buy a good computer, then no matter what game you buy you will be able to play and it will run fast and look good.
Good luck in deciding =D
