Lag on planetside

i lag horribly on planetside and i have 2 things that i think are the problem. 1, I have a geforce 4 MX which i hear is not very good, the other is that i have windows ME, not XP, which i think is faster. Which is likely to be the bigger problem? (i easily meet the other requirements)

Excuse my ignorance here, I have just looked at the Planetside website and noted that the game is 'Online - Player v Player.

I think you should be looking at your networking / Internet setup rather than graphics cards and Operating System.

i saw farther down the list of posts that another person had lag problems, and lewis mentioned that if he had gf4 MX that would probably be a big problem, so is there a good chance that the lag will get better if i get a better video card? my internet connection is quite solid.

Do you get 'lagging' in games played without network connections?

What is your hardware setup?

It may very well be your graphics card but if it works with 'local' games ...

Also I think you will find that the slowest graphics card ever made is a lot lot faster than any internet connection.

I have been playing online games for several years. (mostly 1st person shooters & flight sims) Loosechippings is correct, the connection of you or who is in the game with you is the biggest cause of lag. Even with cable or dsl connections "custom skins or paints" will cause problems. My newest game is IL2 Sturomivik Forgotten Battles. In large rooms there is some lag whenever someone enters the room. So if people constantly enter & leave this causes some of it. Also the custom skins cause the problem too. I recently up graded my VGA to a TI4200, this helped in the games with lots of good grafics.

AMD xp2700+
Nvidia Gforce Ti420
Maxtor 40 gig HD
2 @ 256 meg 2700 ram
DSL ISP

I also play planetside, along with friends, (one of wich has an GF4MX card, and had 512 of ram. He increased the Ram to 1024 and the lagging almost totally went away. He still gets a little during heavy fighting but really not enough to cause a problem. Increasing the ram is a lot cheaper than buying a high end vid card and as long as you are running at reccomended video setting you should be fine. By the way, the game is a ram hog, using 750+ megs of ram in light fighting, up to 900 during heavy action. So try increasing the ram, (another 512 stick) and you should be good to go. See ya in game.
