Do a bit of housekeeping ...

Remove unwanted files and applications by running Disk Cleanup.

Check your Hard Disk for errors using Check Disk.

Defrag your Hard Drive

Download the latest patches for the game.

Download and install the latest drivers for your system video and sound cards.

Then try again.

Have reinstalled windows, updated all drivers and bios. i also took out one of my ram modules. I have been getting the game to work a bit in windows 98, but am now having my computer restart fairly often while playing the game. does this sound like there is a problem with the ram that is still in my computer?

This is the error message i get. has anyone else heard of this problem?

" Technical Difficulties..........

You have encountered a serious error. Serious errors can be caused by many things including viruses, overheated hardware and hardware that does not meet the minimum specifications for the game. Please visit the forums at www.generals.ea.com for suggested courses of action or consult your manual for technical support contact information"

Hmm, what type of RAM have you got in your system??

Are you sure it suits your motherboard; because you're saying that your system is frequently restaring.

Your RAM may have errors due to been exposed to static electricity, if this is the case this is most probably why your system often stops responding.

Are you sure the RAM you have in your system is properly supported by your motherboard, if you have DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM. This could be your problem, because some DDR memory modules are only compatible with certain motherboards.

If you have normal PC133 based SDRAM (Synchronoused Dynamic Random Access Memory)
then it's most likely that your RAM is damaged, try swapping both RAM modules in a different order and see if your computer still restarts.

Also is your computers performance also lacking; you may have a virus on your system, if you have a Antivirus program i.e.Nortan Antivirus, Mcaffe Virus scan, Nod32, etc you should update it regularly, and scan your system for viruses.

Also please type up what your current BIOS (Basic In-put Out-put System) settings are, you may have you system set on optimal performance which can cause the system to lock-up or restart, so make sure you have this disabled unless you have a lot of fans in your system. <- I know this from experience, I have also had similar problems with having optimal performance enabled so disable it and try running the game.

Also you should make sure that there're no devices conflicting in your system, so look in device manager for any coflicting I/O controllers, Peripherals, etc.

Lastly try quitting the apps running in your OS's (Operating Systems) system tray; this will improve performance and will also cause less conflictions with the game.

Ok finally, I guess you could try restoring your BIOS settings to default and see what happends, if you're still having problems please reply about what other issues you're experiencing.

Hope this helps

ok bear with me on this one it might sound strange but it does work. this is for the problem with the start up (generals - technical difficulties. zero hour - serious error...) you can do it with generals and zero hour. first delete the C&C folders in My Documents, next delete the main installation folders (default - C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals). once you have done this insert the CD (first disc) click on install, the repair or remove box will appear, select the remove option. this will unistall the game, now reinstall the game and you shouldnt get anymore nagging 'technical difficulties' or 'serious errors' at start up. goodluck!

Please supply more detail - specs and driver

Hdds and monitors mean little unless you have a hdd going bad, the manufacturers website will have tools to determine this, please supply specs for your psu, random reboots can be caused by many things, do a few of these tests and post the results

EDIT: I kind of forgot the obvious to a degree, I am presuming you have done the usual virus/spyware checks and are clean,

Housecall virus scan link

Panda virus scan link

Spybot link

Adaware link

All I know is that when I tried to run Generals on my older computer, it ran but was incredibly slow. I run it now on my newer computer that I got about a year ago, and it runs fine, esp in medium quality graphics. So, Generals is a new game, and seems to only run well or in your case, at all, on newer computers and operating systems.

Good game btw. Unique in the world of Command and Conquer.
