win2000 gaming problem!!!

I just installed windows 2000 from xp, but now when i go to play a game (ONLINE) like "Return to castle wolfenstein" or "CS" my ping is always higher than 600 and i keep getting lagg, i am on a cable connection i close everything in the background and it still happens can some body help
