Action Replay MAX On newer PS2

I just got a PS2 for christmas, the new model which promises less noise, progressive scan on DVDs etc

I bought a PS2 Action Replay MAX for it and I insert both the cartridge in the correct slot and the cd in the cd tray but the msg just says 'Please insert a proper Playstation or Playstation2 format disc.'


Has anyone has this problem before, and could someone give me advice on what to do? I have already returned the first AR Max to the shop and exchanged but the problem persists.
