Installing a old harddrive

I have a dell dimension desktop 8200 with a included 40GB hard disk. I also have a 4GB Maxtor hard disk from an old computer. I wanna put it in.

However, i lost the thing on the back of the hard disk that covers two of the pins. Also, i dont know where it goes.

Fortunately, however, i have yet another hard disk which i could take the thing that covers the two pins from (can i?). So the problem is that i dont know where to put the thing that covers the two pins.

On the top of the hard disk, it says Jumper:J50. I have pictures, but dont know how to put them in a post.

Thanks for any help

There really is no need to use that old HD unless you've got some important files on it as it is very small and likely not very fast.

I'ld recommend to repation your current HD if you want more drives to save various files to. The downside to that means that you will need to format your current HD.

If the jumpercap (the thing on the back ) fits on your HD you can use it.
Where you should place might depend on the model, so could you write the model number from your disc.

Usually Maxtor doesn't require a jumber when used as slave. And you should set it as slave

I will disagree with Moreno on this one ...

A 4 GB Drive is ideal for storage of important personal data.

It would be even better if you could fit it into an external casing so that you can transport the drive from PC to PC.

Have a look here
