It doesn't appear that way, although I would download a copy of the motherboard manuel from ASUS if you don't already have one.

My Motherboard is an ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe and it does not have dual channel. It just has 3 black memory slots. Currently, I have 2 512 sticks in it. Like an hour ago I ordered another 512 stick to fill up all 3 slots.

How about 4x256mb

My motherbooard has 4 dimm sockets, and right now I just have 2x256mb running at dual channel. I wonder if I can add another pair of 256mb or 1 stick of 512mb to make it run at 2x512mb dual channel?

Thanks for your help!

Generally speaking "Yes", but again you must check your Mobo manuel to be sure. Download it if you don't have one.

May i ask another stupid question... What's the difference between DDR and DDR2? And how can I tell if the ram is DDR2 when I buy it?

Thanks

if i install only one then it runs at 400 mhz but...when i installed both it only runs at 333mhz.??
it this becase the brand of memory was different..????

It's hard to say exactly, but does sound like a compatibility issue. Some machines are very "fussy" when it comes to Ram. I would suggest you physically look at both sticks and compare. Are they both "single sided" or "double sided" (memory chips), or one of each? Have you tried the new stick on it's own? You say that with one stick, it does run @ 400, so I'll assume you've tried the new stick that way. How is it you are determining the Ram speed? Another note to remember, is that along with being fussy, some machines just don't work well with certain brand chips. You can physically have two sticks of the same brand and speed, but they can also have two completely different chips from one to the other. Some manufactures offer a "memory chart" that will tell you if a particular stick they mfg. is suited for your machine.

One thing that puzzles me though, are 100% sure you have a CPU that is ..
1- a "P4"?
2- a "P4" that has a front side bus of 800mhz?

Dell doesn't appear to have offered a 3000 with a P4 2.4, but rather a Celeron 2.4, key word "appears".
You can not simply go by the P4 decal on the outside of the box, as Dell is known for selling a computer specifically with a Celeron, yet still labeling the box with a P4 sticker.

Bottom line is, that unless you have a CPU with a 800 front side bus, your machine will not run at a Ram speed of 400 MHZ, but rather at 333 MHZ.

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I've been A.W.O.L!

Basically the DDR2 is the next generation Ram after DDR and is somewhat faster. As far as I know, only the newer Mobos with the lastest chpsets use this Ram.

hi tahsnk for the reply..........i do have pentium processor.....not 100% sure...but it shows Intel pentium...in BIOS...but havent check the label of processor...and yes its 2.8 ghz (sorry it wasnot 2.4 ghz) with 800 FSB....
yes and they both run at 400 mhz when used .....only one at a time.......
i think whether the problem is occuring because either the brand used are different.......(coz i think i was supposed to use...same brand memory .....so that voltage will be same..) or..it is because....the latency of 2 memry are different..one has CL3 and other CL 2.5??
does anyone have any idea..??

Probably not, but can't say for sure without knowing your system specs.

Hey everyone-

If people are still here...hah, sorry to add yet even more personal confusion to the board, but when i was scrolling through page 1 i read that one person said that the two identical cards need to be next to each other in the same color to have dual, then another person said they need to be in opposite colors. Which one is right? And is there a way to check in windows if youre operating in dual channel mode? Thanks a lot

The color coded dimm slots signify each "channel". You should in theory, install matching ram (or as close as possible) into the same colored slots for best results. This would apply if and when you have four Dimm slots.
Less then that (3 slots or less), it may not make much difference.

Dual Channel configuration

Hi
I have an Asus P5LP LE motherboard with two sticks of PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. The Board has Dual Channel memory architecture and I want to upgrade the RAM while retaining the dual channel function.
Can EACH identical PAIR of RAM modules be of different value in a dual channel configuration? (i.e can an existing pair of 512MB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM modules be installed with two identical 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM in the remaining 2 slots without losing Dual Channel function?)
Thanks for your help

Question hmm?

Hi there people

Thought i'd ask for some help, you seem a helpful bunch.

My motherboard has four RAM slots, 2 yellow and 2 blue, i'm currently using 2 x1gb OCZ pc3200 in the yellow slots. This should result in the RAM running Dual Channel? yes?

I also have a matched pair of 2 x 256mb samsung pc3200 sitting in their packaging if i put these in the 2 remaining slots (the 2 Blue 1's) will this still remain in dual channel mode?

thx in advance
